The Fun Of Crappie Fishing

Crappie are one of the most sought after fish species on Lake Oconee and can be caught year round! There are a few different techniques and strategies, The  start of crappie fishing season is in January where we push a dozen long 14 foot ultra light fishing poles tipped with jigs and minnows in the main lake channel fishing deep for these big ol pan sized fish! As soon as it warms a bit we come out of the channel and start fishing the very backs of your major creeks and coves looking for the big hefty females and males Reaching well over 2 1/2 pounds Lake Oconee is known for! We will be fishing as shallow as 2 ft of water! We look for the major full moon in March for that shallow bite! Within a few weeks are heading back out a little deeper where these big fish are laid back up after the spawn but this time we are doing a technique called along line trolling where we are pulling a number of jigs with different lengths of rods and at times will catch 5-6 fish at once! Come Mid May-early November we are fishing Structure such as trees left in The lake when It was impounded, rock piles, home foundations, ledges, road beds etc. we will be vertical jigging small jigs as well as dropping minnows over the schools of crappie in The same structure! Come December we are fishing the mouths of creeks and coves long line trolling deep for the big fish that are getting ready to head back into the channel for a few weeks! Then the trend starts back over again! For a fun filled cooler filling ttime give me a call!!!
